Health & Safety
When lead acid and Nickel Cadmium wet cells are charged, they emit a potentially explosive mixture of Oxygen and Hydrogen. Adequate ventilation when installing equipment in confined areas is essential. A battery is electrically live at all times and can not be isolated in the conventional sense. Therefore, precautions restricting unauthorised access to battery rooms and cabinets should be undertaken.
Battery Options
Powerfaze central battery units are supplied with 10 year life sealed lead acid batteries as standard. Descriptions of battery options offering a variety of costs, service life and maintenance required are detailed as follows:
10 Year Life Sealed Lead Acid
Valve regulated lead acid batteries are the most popular choice for central battery systems as they are maintenance-free and have an expected service life of 10 years. The interior construction immobilises the acid within a sponge like material and the electrolyte remains throughout the charge and discharge cycles. There is no loss through gassing during the life of the battery as the cells are completely sealed.

Flat Plate Lead Acid
Low antimony pasted plated cells are housed within a translucent plastic case, which ensures ease of checking electrolyte levels. The cells have a low internal resistance, which result in good regulation, especially at higher rates of discharge. A large electrolyte reservoir enables longer periods between topping up. This type of cell has a reasonable tolerance to neglect and has a service life between 12 and 15 years.

Planté Lead Acid
There high performance cells offer ultra reliable trouble-free service when well maintained. The clear cell casing enable the electrolyte levels to be checked easily and a large electrolyte reservoir limits maintenance requirements. The cells retain 100% capacity throughout their design life and give excellent performance at high or low levels of discharge. This type of cell has a service life up to 25 years.

Nickel Cadmium Alkaline
These cells are extremely robust and will tolerate arduous operating conditions. The cells have translucent cases to enable the electrolyte level to be checked easily. Deep discharge has no adverse effect on the cell capacity and unlike lead acid cells, they can be left in a discharged condition without incurring damage. This type of cell has a service life up to 25 years.
